On Sunday 12th April the Scottish Music Hall Society bestowed a lifetime achievement award on Tony Roper, one of the Patrons of the Friends of Britannia Panopticon Music Hall Trust and long-time supporter of our beloved music hall and the campaign. Judith Bowers (campaign founder and director) and Tom Kelly (trustee of the Friends of Britannia Panopticon Music Hall) were invited as guests at the luncheon. Judith was also asked to do a speech about Tony in which she thanked him for his incredible support and friendship over the years, calling him Two Hottie Botties Roper, a reference to the fact that during one of the shows that Tony compered, it was so cold he wore two hot water bottles around his neck to keep himself warm.
Amongst his list of supporting activities, Tony was amongst the fabulous line-up of performers, including the Krankies, who launched the refurbished stage in May 2015 and he also allowed oor Grant to re-write the Steamie for a drag version called Dragged Tae the Steamie – which sold out and made several thousand pounds for the charity.
So, here’s a cheer for our dear friend, Tony Roper. Thank you for all your help and support. Your award is well deserved.
