130 Years of Cinema

Join us as we celebrate 130 years of the moving image in Britannia Panopticon Music Hall. We will be showing the very first films that flickered into life on the screen of the music hall on August 25th 1896. Admission is free, but we hope that you will leave a donation to support the conservation campaign. The films will be accompanied by live music performed by Gilmour Macleod and Lawrence Dunn.

Charlie Chaplin's 'The Gold Rush' with live music

Gladstone's Bag presents Charlie Chaplin’s timeless comedy classic, The Gold Rush, one of the top ten highest grossing films of the silent era, accompanied by a live musical score.

While on a gold-hunting mission to Alaska, a rogue is hit by a storm and seeks refuge in a hut, where he meets a fugitive and a gold-seeker. However, after reaching the town, he falls in love with the lovely Georgia, a showgirl stuck in the town.

Maureen Beattie performs a staged reading of Marie of Scotland

Fresh from playing the title role in Lear at Pitlochry and just before assuming the part of the Headmistress in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie for the National Theatre of Scotland, the redoubtable Maureen Beattie will be revisiting one of her most colourful characterisations when she portrays Mary, Queen of Scots in a staged reading of W. Gordon Smith’s Marie of Scotland at the historic Britannia Panopticon Music Hall at 3pm on Sunday 13 th September.
