"Dark Nights Make for Brighter Days"
February 27th
Doors open at 2.30pm, show starts 3pm
London based singer-songwriter Samantha Whates performs music from her forthcoming release "Dark Nights Make for Brighter Days" in the unique setting of the Britannia Panopticon.
In this special concert, Samantha is joined by Frevo Quartet and pianist Mira Opalinska, adding atmosphere and breadth to her reflective and poignant songs. And, as a special Music Hall treat - to complement the wonderful surroundings of the Panopticon, Samantha will also perform a short selection of her Grandad's original songs from the 1920s & 1930s. Frevo Quartet will perform the Bordel 1900 movement from Astor Piazzolla's famous Histoire du Tango. "

The Creative Martyrs first appeared in 1883*, performing cabaret song and speciality acts in music halls, circus, travelling shows and public houses in Glasgow and London. However many of their audiences felt The Creative Martyrs were far ahead of their time and as such it wasn’t until their Weimer Cabaret acts of 1920’s that the, by then jaded Martyrs, found a sympathetic ear. They further developed their cynicism in the vaudeville shows of 1940’s America by which time they were considered passé. In recent years The Creative Martyrs have returned to their roots, suffering for their art in Glasgow and Edinburgh, although in this modern age of international travel they ply their wares in any place that will have them and the many that won’t.
Ever eager to provoke and if necessary entertain, let us introduce ourselves… We are The Creative Martyrs.
* please note that this is in the imagination of the Creative Martyrs

Built Heritage Week & Doors Open Day 2008
Doors open day 2008 saw over 3500 people visit the Britannia Panopticon Music Hall to enjoy not just the famous auditorium, but also to peruse the wonderful costumes on display (provided by the inimitable Mr Graham Hunter, costumer of stage and screen).
This wonderful exhibition also included a selection of pre WW1 films of Glasgow which were supplied by Scottish Screen and the NLS (National Library of Scotland). These provided an illuminating insight into the early 20th century experience of "Goin' doon the watter for the Fair" (when the men wore hats and moustaches and the women wore huge bonnets) and a poignant peice of footage of the tram drivers parading across George Square prior to joining the front - line of WW1; from which many (sadly) did not return.

Please note that due to the nature of Britannia Panopticon there are many restrictions which limits the kind of performance that can be staged in Britannia Panopticon.
